Turoe and Athenry:
Ancient Capitals of Celtic Ireland
By Fr. Tom O’Connor
Edited by Dr. Kieran Jordan
INTRODUCTION
- The Ulidian Tales, Ireland’s oldest
legends, tell of continuous warfare between Ulster and Connaught.
- Ptolemy’s 1st Century A.D. map of Ireland shows a Royal site in
Galway.
- The
Turoe Stone, the best Celtic stone artwork in Europe,
was found in Galway.
- Ireland’s oldest origin legends tell of the
Fir Belg invasion through the Iron Age seaport near Clarinbridge and the
establishment of a Royal site in Galway.
- Ptolemy’s ‘most
illustrious city in all Britannia’ was in Galway.
- Yet, despite all
this evidence, Irish history books do not record anything of interest in
Galway during the Iron Age.
- This
new book (launch date: July 13th 2003) describes and shows evidence
for extensive linear fortifications, an extensive ancient road network and
several ROYAL sites, all in Galway.
- This evidence, along with the
documentary, legendary and oral history evidence, indicates that Galway
was of immense importance during the Iron Age in Ireland.
